What is Levitra?
Levitra is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
Levitra works by increasing blood flow to the penis. During sexual stimulation, the active ingredient vardenafil helps relax blood vessels supplying the penis. This allows increased blood flow into the penis, resulting in an erection when sexually aroused.
How does Levitra work?
Levitra contains the active ingredient vardenafil, which is a PDE5 inhibitor. PDE5 is an enzyme that breaks down cGMP, a chemical that helps relax the smooth muscle cells in the penis to allow blood flow into the penis. When PDE5 is inhibited, cGMP levels increase, allowing for increased blood flow into the penis and resulting in an erection.
How long does Levitra last?
Levitra’s effects can last for 4-5 hours on average. The medication starts working within 30-60 minutes after taking it. Levitra contains the active ingredient vardenafil, which enhances blood flow to the penis to help men get and maintain an erection.
Vardenafil’s effects peak 1-2 hours after taking Levitra and gradually decrease over the next few hours. The duration of action can vary based on the dosage taken:
- Levitra 5 mg may last for up to 4 hours
- Levitra 10 mg may last for up to 5 hours
- Levitra 20 mg may last for up to 6 hours
The half-life of vardenafil is 4-6 hours, which means it takes this long for the concentration in the blood to be reduced by half. Traces of the medication could still remain in the body up to 24 hours later.
It’s important to take Levitra no more than once per day to avoid side effects. The effects won’t last longer by taking extra doses. Waiting 24 hours between each dose allows the medication to completely clear the system.
Side effects of Levitra
Levitra is generally well tolerated, but some side effects may occur. The most common side effects are headache, flushing, stuffy nose, and indigestion. These mild side effects often go away after a few hours.
More serious side effects are rare but can include sudden vision loss or vision changes, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, priapism (painful erection lasting more than 4 hours), and heart problems.
Some of the more common side effects of Levitra include:
- Back pain – Around 2% of men experience back pain, likely due to the vasodilation caused by the drug.
- Vision loss – A small number of men have experienced a sudden loss of vision, likely due to reduced blood flow to the optic nerve. Seek emergency care if this occurs.
- Hearing problems – Sudden decrease or loss of hearing has occurred in a few cases. Discontinue Levitra if this happens.
- Heart attack – Levitra can cause blood pressure to drop to unsafe levels for those already at risk of heart disease. Chest pain has also been reported rarely.
Who should not take Levitra?
Levitra should not be taken by certain individuals due to the potential for dangerous interactions or side effects. Most notably, those taking nitrates for chest pain such as nitroglycerin should avoid Levitra altogether. When taken together, Levitra and nitrates can cause blood pressure to drop to dangerously low levels. This severe drop in blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, fainting, permanent vision damage, or even death.
How to take Levitra
- Levitra is taken orally, typically as a tablet that is swallowed whole. It should be taken approximately 30-60 minutes before sexual activity is anticipated.
- For faster onset of action, Levitra is best taken on an empty stomach. Food, especially high-fat meals, can delay the absorption and onset of effects.
- The recommended starting dose of Levitra is 10 mg, taken as needed before sex. Based on effectiveness and tolerability, the dose may be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg.
- Levitra provides benefits for 4-5 hours after taking the dose. One tablet is sufficient to achieve results during this time. Do not take more than the maximum recommended dose of 20 mg daily.
- Levitra can be taken with or without food, but as mentioned, taking it on an empty stomach will result in a faster response.
Warnings
Levitra can cause serious side effects and should be used with caution. Do not take Levitra if you take any medications containing nitrates, as the combination can cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure. Nitrates are commonly used to treat angina (chest pain). Medications containing nitrates include nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, and isosorbide dinitrate. Always inform your doctor about any medications you are taking before starting Levitra.
Also do not take Levitra if you take guanylate cyclase stimulators, another type of medication used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. An example is riociguat (Adempas). The combination can cause dangerous effects on blood pressure.
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours while taking Levitra. This rare but serious condition is called priapism. It requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage to the penis. Prolonged erections can rupture blood vessels and cause long-term ED.
